Chewy takes a 5-fer

Chewy

Portly skipper clean bowls 5 Old boys

Overcast damp conditions greeted the teams in this Division 2 P&D match played over 18 overs.  HSOB won the toss and chose to field first and Oddballs’ in-form opening pair of Rich “The Heat” Porritt and Ross “Sossage” Warner did not disappoint as they put on 60 for the opening wicket off 11 overs.  When Porritt holed out for 29 and Warner for 20 the wheels threatened to come off again for the home team as Nicholas fell for 6 and Downer for just 2.  Nathan Parsons came in a sped things up with a quickfire 14 and Marc “The Touch” Jones nudged himself a pleasing 9 not out.  With extras also contributing 23 Oddballs finished 105-6 which felt about 15 runs below par.

HSOB lost opener Ward for a duck to Adam Nicholas but skipper Giles and opener Hefford tucked into the Oddballs bowling quickly amassing 60 off the first six overs.  With just 46 needed off 12 overs Oddballs slowed the pace by bringing on the mystery leg-spin of Ryan “Chewy” Hewitt.  However, his first over went for 9 and Oddballs found themselves in real trouble.  Fortunately Adam Nicholas took care of Hefford and from there the Old Boys started to wobble.

Chewy then started to weave his magic; skipper Giles was first to fall, bowled after being dropped and being let-off a nailed on stumping opportunity.  Next came Bennett who had foolishly called Chewy “Shamu” earlier in the game; he was less gobby when he got bowled first ball as the portly bowler danced topless around him.  Chewy went on to finish 5-21 with all five clean bowled; Parse wrapped things up at the other end with an excellent spell of 4-1-6-2 and Gavin Hewitt got in on the act with a run out for the last wicket. HSOB finished 84-10; Oddballs win by 21 runs.

Hele School bring a whole new meaning to the "corridor of uncertainty"

Hele School old boys brought a whole new meaning to the famous phrase "corridor of uncertainty" on their recent tour to Cheltenham. They took the chance of an impromptu training session whilst stuck in traffic on the M5 as the photo below shows. There's also a team photo of the nutte...whoops..players in normal surroundings. Top marks for improvisation lads but what would Geoffrey think?

Lopes double hat trick knocks Hele School for 6

Dave&Carl

Lopes bowlers Dave Bennett (6-11) and Carl Price(4-5)

In a stunning display of bowling the Lopes Arms continued their fine form in Division Two with a comprehensive victory over Hele School Old Boys.  It is a rare event to see one hat trick in a game of cricket but the Lopes opening bowlers went one better than that by serving up two to leave the Hele School batting line up in tatters.

Hele School started brightly by restricting the Lopes innings to a modest 116 with Ryan Rickard top scoring on 43. Although he was not best pleased with his father, Andy,  who gave him out stumped whilst  umpiring at square leg!

The Hele School innings never got going as Lopes opening bowler Carl Price removed their opener for 4 then blew away the rest of their top order with the first of the hat tricks. Meanwhile at the other end his opening partner Dave Bennett  did not want to be left out  of the action and duely removed a further 2 batsmen.  By this time the writing was on the wall for Hele School and Dave Bennett applied the coup de grace with another hat trick to ensure the Lopes Arms won by 98 runs.
